It's school holidays and what better time to introduce budding historians to the wonders of history and museums?
Commissariat Store Museum - Tuesday to Friday 10:00am-4pm Adult $6/Children $3 - Family $12
The Commissariat Store is a niche museum that specialises in showcasing Queensland History. The museum is an initiative of The Royal Historical Society of Queensland and staffed by volunteers from the Society.
The most significant exhibit is the building itself. The Commissariat Store is Queensland's oldest habitable, and most significant heritage building. The lower two floors of this magnificent building were convict built during 1828 and 1829. The third floor, now the main entrance from William Street was added in 1913.

Dr Sandra Bayley will speak about her mother, Dorothy Bayley, from her biography titled Dorothy. The Bayleys, Brian and Dorothy, had their home built in The Woods when the district was still a dairy farm. 1:30pm-3:30pm - QFHS DNA Interest Group
This group seeks to share information on aspects of genetic family history.This includes use of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) information in searching for family, whether as surname or all-male lines, all female lines, or close cousins. DNA can add weight to existing documentary evidence, suggest new lines of research, and help resolve questions such as whether you could be related to a particular family.
Some group members are interested in medical aspects, either for historical reasons or for their own well-being. Others members are interested in deep history, not just where their recorded ancestors lived, but also their probable ancient origins.
This broad range of interests is represented for convenience by just three letters: DNA.

12:30pm - Royal Historical Society of Queensland - War Animals - lunchtime meeting at the Commissariat Store - light lunch is provided - please bring a contribution to cover costs.
Guest speaker Nigel Allsopp's topic will be 'War Animals'.
Nigel Allsopp is a world authority on canines. He spent 15 years as a military working dog handler in the Royal New Zealand Air Force Police, responsible for all aspects of Canine Operations and training within the NZ Defence Force.
Nigel has written several books on War dogs and Police Dogs including the best sellers two Australian War Dogs and Cry Havoc: The History of Military War Dogs and his new release K9 COPS. Nigel has written numerous articles on Canine training for International Law Enforcement Magazines and has been a contributing author to the prestigious British Royal Army Veterinary Corps Journal and other Military journals in the United States.
